Gum disease (Periodontal disease)

gum diseaseAsk yourself:

  • DO YOUR GUMS BLEED WHEN YOU BRUSH YOUR TEETH?
  • DO YOU SUFFER WITH BAD BREATH?
  • HAVE YOUR TEETH MOVED RECENTLY?
  • ARE YOU A SMOKER?
  • DO YOU HAVE A FAMILY HISTORY OF GUM DISEASE?

If the answer to any or all of these is yes, you may have gum disease.

The majority of patients we see here in this surgery for the first time will have gum disease and not be aware of it.

Gum disease is an infection of the gums and bone which support your teeth – the consequences of gum disease are loosening and early loss of teeth as well as bleeding gums and bad breath. Bacteria which are present in gum disease have also been shown to cause low birth rate and heart problems.

Gum disease can be a silent disease and unfortunately can have caused significant irreversible destruction by the time we detect it.

As with all these type of diseases, early detection is key, but prevention is ideal.

Here in Swords Dentist, we carry out thorough screening of every patient (at every examination visit) for gum disease. We take great care in our management and treatment of what can be a very difficult condition to control.
