Cancer Of The Mouth and Throat (Oral Cancer)

Cancer of the mouth is the fifteenth most common cancer in Ireland and UK (2009 figures) and only half of these will survive a 5 year period. Compare this with Cancer of the Cervix which is the nineteenth most common cancer according to Ireland and UK figures (2009).

What makes this more difficult to accept is that Oral Cancer is one of a very small number of cancers which can be detected at a very early stage simply by having your mouth fully inspected by your dentist regularly. Here in this dental surgery, we have detected a significant number of mouth cancers. The earlier this is detected the better the outcome of the treatment. Treatment can be aggressive and difficult with life changing consequences.

Early Detection is key

We need to increase awareness of this disease. It is one of the few cancers that can be picked up visually early but only if you allow us to look inside your mouth regularly for it. Regular 6 monthly check ups are essential and we automatically include this in our full mouth inspection. Prevention is ideal.

Risk factors for this disease include:

  • Smoking
  • Alcohol
  • Chewing tobacco
  • Poorly maintained mouth and dentition
  • Poorly fitting dentures
  • Some viruses
